Raj (name changed), a 52-year-old man, was rushed to the Emergency Department at Artemis Hospital, Gurgaon, after suddenly developing weakness on the right side of his body and slurred speech. His family recognised the signs of a possible brain stroke and brought him in within the critical first hourβ€”a decision that proved life-saving. Upon arrival, Raj was conscious but confused, with partial paralysis and facial drooping. A quick neurological assessment and brain imaging confirmed that he had suffered an acute ischemic stroke caused by a blood clot blocking blood flow to a part of his brain.

Our stroke team at Artemis Hospitals immediately initiated the stroke protocol. Time was of the essence, and after ruling out any bleeding in the brain, Raj was given a clot-busting medication (intravenous thrombolysis) to dissolve the obstruction and restore blood flow. Thanks to the rapid response, the treatment was started within the "golden hour," which significantly increases the chances of a full recovery in stroke patients. Over the next few hours, Raj's symptoms began to improve. The weakness in his limbs reduced, and his speech became clearer.

He was then admitted to the Stroke Intensive Care Unit for close monitoring and supportive care. Over the following days, Raj received physiotherapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy to help him regain strength and coordination. The clot-dissolving treatment had worked effectively, preventing major damage to his brain tissue. Within five days, he was walking with minimal support and was discharged shortly after, with a customised rehabilitation plan to continue his recovery at home.

Today, Raj has made a complete recovery and is back to his daily routine with no residual weakness or speech issues. He remains under regular follow-up with our neurology team and has adopted a healthier lifestyle to reduce his risk of future strokes. His case highlights the critical importance of recognising stroke symptoms early and seeking immediate medical attention.

Stroke is a medical emergency where every minute counts. Raj's story is a testament to how early intervention and expert care can make the difference between lifelong disability and a full recovery.
