The most critical injury occurred in her left thigh, where a significant portion of tissue—including the femoral artery, the main blood vessel supplying the lower limb—was destroyed. This type of injury immediately compromises blood flow, leading to acute limb ischemia, a condition that can rapidly result in irreversible damage if not treated in time.
The immediate clinical concern in such trauma is massive blood loss, which can lead to hemorrhagic shock, reduced oxygen delivery to vital organs, and potentially death. Simultaneously, the absence of blood supply to the limb places it at high risk of Gangrene, where prolonged oxygen deprivation causes tissue necrosis. If untreated, gangrene can spread and necessitate amputation to prevent systemic complications such as sepsis.
In addition to vascular damage, animal bites introduce a high risk of infection due to contamination with bacteria like Pasteurella, Staphylococcus, and anaerobic organisms. This increases the likelihood of cellulitis, deep tissue infection, and even life-threatening sepsis. There is also a significant concern for rabies exposure, requiring immediate vaccination and immunoglobulin therapy as part of emergency care.
Given the severity of the situation, the Pediatric Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery team at Artemis Hospitals acted swiftly. Recognizing that every minute was critical, they performed a highly complex and time-sensitive procedure to restore blood flow. The damaged artery was surgically replaced using an artificial vascular graft, successfully re-establishing circulation to the leg. This timely intervention falls within the critical window for revascularization, significantly improving the chances of limb salvage.

Post-surgery, the child remains at risk of complications such as graft blockage, infection, and delayed wound healing.
