A 12-year-old boy, Aryan, was admitted to Artemis Hospitals, Gurugram, with end-stage heart failure caused by Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM). Despite aggressive medical treatment, his condition deteriorated to a critical stage, marked by extreme fatigue and severe systemic congestion. With no immediate donor available for a heart transplant, the clinical team had to act quickly to provide advanced mechanical circulatory support.

The surgical team, led by Dr. Aseem R. Srivastava, Chief – Paediatric Cardiac Surgery, performed a complex implantation of a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD). This mechanical pump was designed to take over the workload of the failing left ventricle, ensuring adequate blood circulation throughout the body.

The procedure demanded exceptional surgical precision. Implanting an LVAD in a pediatric patient requires careful anatomical placement within a smaller chest cavity while avoiding vascular compression. The team also carried out meticulous hemodynamic calibration, adjusting the device’s flow dynamics to meet Aryan’s metabolic needs. In addition, a carefully monitored anticoagulation strategy was established to balance the risk of clot formation while maintaining long-term device function.

The surgery was successful and resulted in the immediate stabilization of Aryan’s hemodynamic status. The LVAD now serves as a vital “bridge to transplant,” allowing his organs time to recover while giving him the strength needed to undergo cardiac rehabilitation as he awaits a suitable donor heart.

This case highlights the life-saving role of advanced mechanical circulatory support in pediatric cardiac care when conventional treatment options are limited.

At Artemis Hospitals, Gurugram, advanced technology, surgical expertise, and compassionate care come together to give young patients facing life-threatening heart conditions a renewed chance at life.
