A viral video circulating online features an Australian woman named Anne Osborne, who claimed to have subsisted solely on orange juice for 40 days. In her video, Osborne mentioned experiencing emotional, physical, and spiritual benefits from the mono-diet. But is it safe and healthy to live only on orange juice for an extended period? 

To answer this question, OnlyMyHealth consulted Dr. Sangeeta Tiwari, Clinical Nutritionist at Artemis Lite, New Delhi. Dr. Tiwari provided insight into the potential consequences of such a diet and whether it can sustain a person for 40 days.

Is It Possible to Survive on Orange Juice for 40 Days?
Dr. Tiwari expressed her concerns about surviving solely on orange juice for an extended period. She stated, "Surviving only on orange juice for more than a month isn't advisable due to its lack of essential nutrients like protein, healthy fats, and certain vitamins and minerals." While orange juice contains vitamin C and carbohydrates, it falls short in other nutrients necessary for a healthy diet.

Nutritional Deficiencies
Orange juice may provide some vital nutrients, such as vitamin C, potassium, and antioxidants. However, relying solely on it for survival can lead to significant nutritional deficiencies. Dr. Tiwari explained, "Orange juice lacks essential nutrients like protein, healthy fats, and certain vitamins and minerals crucial for overall health." 

These deficiencies can result in weakened immune function, muscle loss, metabolic imbalances, and tooth decay due to the high sugar content in orange juice.

Health Risks
Dr. Tiwari highlighted the potential health risks associated with excessive consumption of orange juice. "High sugar content in orange juice can disrupt blood sugar levels, causing fluctuations and potentially affecting hormone regulation," she warned. Over time, these fluctuations can lead to metabolic disorders and other health issues.

Protein is Essential
Protein is a vital nutrient that the body requires for various functions. The absence of protein in the diet can lead to muscle wasting and weakness. Dr. Tiwari cautioned that when the body lacks protein, it may start breaking down muscle tissue for energy, which can result in muscle loss and weakness.

Long-Term Consequences
Prolonged reliance on orange juice alone can have severe health consequences. "While orange juice provides some nutrients, it lacks essential elements like protein, healthy fats, calcium, and certain vitamins and minerals crucial for overall health," Dr. Tiwari explained. This imbalance can lead to nutritional deficiencies, weakened immune function, muscle loss, metabolic imbalances, and tooth decay.

The Importance of a Balanced Diet
Dr. Tiwari emphasized the need for a balanced diet that includes a variety of foods. "Relying on just orange juice or any single food for a long period can increase the risk of nutrient deficiencies and health complications," she warned. 

A balanced diet ensures sufficient nutrient intake and supports long-term health and well-being. It is essential to incorporate proteins, fats, and other vitamins and minerals through food or supplements to maintain optimal health.
