How safe are dental X-rays?

Exposure to all sources of radiation - including that of the sun, minerals in the soil, appliances in your home, and dental X-rays - can cause harm to the body's tissues. Fortunately, the dose of radiation you are generally exposed to during the taking of Dental X-rays is extremely small, which is not very harmful. That apart, lead-lined, full-body aprons are used to protect the body from the effects of stray radiation.

What are Dental sealants?Who should get them? How long do they last?

A Sealant is a thin, plastic coating that is applied on the chewing surfaces of teeth - usually the posterior teeth (the premolars and molars)to prevent toothdecay.Ideally, children should get Sealants on their permanent molars and premolars as soon as these teeth erupt. That said, adults without decay or fillings in their molars can also benefit from Sealants. While Sealants can protect the teeth from decay for many years, they do need to be checked for chipping or wear at regular dental check-ups.

What options does one have for changing the shape of teeth?

Several different options are available to change the shape of teeth, such as making it look longer, closing spaces between teeth or repairing chipped or cracked teeth. Some of the options are bonding, crowns, veneers, and re-contouring.

What should one do to combat the fear of approaching a dentist?

The key to coping with dental anxiety is to discuss one’s fears frankly with one’s dentist. Once the dentist knows the nature of the fear one is grappling with, he or she will be better able to address it, thereby making the experience less tense, and ensuring a successful procedure.

What is the right age for your child to visit a dentist?

It is recommended that children visit their first dentist at around 2 years of age. This first visit is important to build lifelong confidence by making the child more acquainted with, and comfortable in, a dental environment – while instilling awareness of good dental hygiene and habits.

Which is better - a manual toothbrush or an electric toothbrush?

When used in the right way and with the correct technique, both can be equally effective. Specifically, electric toothbrushes are more useful for bed-ridden patients.
